The Bower was commissioned by the Friends of Archbishops' Park. The Friends wanted a useful, exciting and accessible shelter/feature for the park. The seating and the supports for the roof are from carved oak so shape naturally came from the form of the wood.
Some people see it as an armadillo, a wood louse, a helmet, all sorts. The truth is - I didn't set out with an idea. The shape and style grew out of the available material being matched to the area that needed to be covered. The roof was made from thin strips of wood, curved and layered to form a support for the lapped roof planks
All made entirely on site over the course of seven months.
